We Must Stay Focused

The church is facing the daunting task of addressing so many issues and concerns today: Islam, same-sex issues, Ebola, Atheism, and so on. We also have family responsibilities. We are husbands and fathers. It can become difficult for pastors to remain focused enough to adequately deal with all of these concerns simultaneously. When we focus on one, three others jump up. And if we are to do our proper service, we can’t just ignore them and pretend they don’t exist. In the midst of all this, we must keep as our main priority the preaching of the gospel and the declaration of the Lord Jesus Christ so the lost might come to know the Lord and the church might be edified. Please remember to pray for your pastor that God will give him grace, wisdom, and strength to stand in face of adversity and declare what thus saith the Lord. Thanks to all who pray for me daily. Please continue to do so.

Seeking Affirmation in This World

I was speaking with a young man the other day who used to attend our church. He never attended faithfully, but just sort of showed up from time to time for a little while until he eventually quit coming altogether. I didn’t just let him go without a fight. I tried every way possible to be a good pastor and go after him. Nothing availed. I’m still praying for him regularly that he’ll come back to the Lord and to church. I’ve been thinking about our phone conversation and there’s been one prevailing theme I’ve noticed in his life and the lives of many of America’s young men: seeking affirmation in this world. So many of our young men (and women) are too caught up in the “here and now.” They’ve taken their eyes OFF of Jesus Christ and are looking to this sinful world. They have a distorted view of reality and priorities that are totally out of sync. They seek affirmation through their jobs. They strive to impress “Bossman So-and-So” and throw Jesus on the back burner. By building relationships at work and climbing the corporate ladder (or whatever ladder they climb) they find meaning and a sense of importance. If they only realized how important they are to God. Please don’t misunderstand me. I’m thankful for people who have a desire to work and be productive. We need more people who have the conviction to get off the couch and do something. But if impressing people on your job is your way of finding your place and feeling like you are “somebody” then let me remind you that you have a soul that is worth more than this entire world and all of its riches…….for Jesus said, “What shall it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” I’m praying that our young adults will refocus and get their eyes back on the Lord and serve him. When you do that, you’ll likewise work for your employer as if he/she were Jesus Christ, and the blessings you’ll reap from the Lord are unimaginable. Young adults, I say to you today……don’t seek your confirmation in this world. That desire you feel to have someone say, “He’s a good worker” is only natural. We all probably feel that way and I’m not saying it’s wrong. But if God is not the main part of your life, those words will only stimulate your flesh. I don’t know who will read this, but if this post describes you, start refocusing today. Deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow Jesus.

Revival Update!

Just confirmed:  Bro. Parker Street, associate pastor of New Victory Baptist Church in Jonesborough, will be preaching on Monday, November 10, and Tuesday, November 11 at The Free Gift Gospel Mission.  I know Bro. Parker Street will be a blessing to many people who’ll attend.  Let’s lift Bro. Parker up in prayer, along with Brothers Ryan Elliott and Steve Gregory.

A Big Surprise

It was an interesting weekend for this ol’ boy.  I’ll be turning the big 4-0 in a few days, so some people from the church got together and decided to throw me a surprise birthday party.  I was truly unaware that anything was up until I met up with Bro. Earl Hulse to go on “visitation” Saturday morning.  He told me to just “park my truck at Blessed Hope (Baptist Church)” because it would be safe there.  As I followed him over to Blessed Hope the whole thing seemed a little suspicious, and I remembered how Melissa had left early that morning.  To make a long story short, Bro. Earl led me into the fellowship hall of Blessed Hope BC where a bunch of hooligans jumped out on me.  At least one thing Bro. Earl told me was true:  we were going to see a “rough bunch” of people.  Ha!  Ha!

The blessings continued yesterday at church as both services brought forth people who gave me gifts and well wishes and just all-around treated me much better than I deserve to be treated.  Thanks to everyone who helped to make this weekend a memorable one.

Revival Update

I just spoke with Bro. Steve Gregory. He is now home from his recent trip to Alaska where he engaged in prison ministry and is excited about being at The Free Gift Gospel Mission on Thursday, November 13, and Friday, November 14. Bro. Steve is a blessing and I’m looking forward to being in services with him. Thanks to all who have been praying for this revival meeting. Please continue to pray as the Lord brings it to your remembrance.
